I have just spent two days at Comber. Friday, when play was washed out and Sunday at the T20 finals and it was fascinating to watch the North Down club at work.
The secret of their success is sheer hard work. The number of helpers each with a designated role and the leadership of stalwarts like Raymond Moreland, Robin Haire and Peter Shields.
I witnessed Peter Shields brushing the pitch between the two games and then witnessed him going around with a ballot to raise over £200. On top of this he was in at 9.30am to help clean the dressing rooms despite not finishing the cup winning celebrations until the small hours. And all with a smile on his face. Most of the cup winning team were on covers or sightscreen duty today testimony of the pride they have in the club.
I'm sure the same dedication would take place at the Lawn and I think if clubs want to see a blueprint for success look no further than those two clubs.
I would also like to congratulate Cliftonville on the win today and their inspirational skipper Davy Munn.
And finally congratulations to CIYMS on winning the Senior T20 trophy. Both teams had a good support and the game was played in a great spirit. Fitting that a long serving CI stalwart in Richard Lucas saw his team home.We had five teenagers in our twelve today and the experience of playing in a cup final like this can only be another step in their development.
Cricket returns to Moylena next weekend for the first time this season with our 1sts at home to Armagh on Saturday and Saintfield on Sunday. I hope all those from Muckamore there today witnessed the hard work being done by so many at North Down.
Thanks Bumper for the comments. Good game today with two evenly matched teams. Its our aim to continue to prove people wrong!
Congratulations to North Down, Cliftonville and CIYMS on their respective trophy wins this weekend. Also Raymond Moreland and his helpers deserve recognition for their hard work preparing the ground in challenging conditions.
Just back from playing in the 20/20 final. Good news- I got another NCU medal. Bad news- it was of the runner-up variety.
But the point I want to make is a big well done to Cliftonville CC. No home ground, unhelpful comments about them possibily winding-up.
No chance super show Cliftonville and all for who support the development of cricket this is a reward for the hard graft and detemination of all at the club!
Long may Cliftonville CC grace our cricket!
re earlier postings on the reserve date for the Cup Final - the actual reserve date turned out to be 31st July when everyone else was involved in matches. I anticipate the reasoning will be that both teams agreed as they had a free day anyway and "sure it gets it played". And we wonder why people don't turn up! Great marketing all right!
Well folks, I did try and warn of the forboding inclement weather forcast, as did others on here !
But this is were the groundsmen prove their worth and value, hopefully despite the possibility of a shower or two, there should be play tomorrow down at Comber, fingers crossed !
Andy,
Despite his huge capacity, even he can't absorb this amount.
don't worry Vic - I have had experience of Mr. Moreland sen. getting the place dried up quickly.
Not all doom and gloom, there may be play after lunch tomorrow.
Jeff,
As you say, there is indeed heavy rain heading our way very early Friday morning and indeed to continue, into the mid morning !
The tricky part is, it should ease off mid-day onwards and how soon could the Comber pitch recover ?
Although I'm told that 'the Green' is by nature one off, if not the dryest and most water absorbant pitches in the country !
So therefore could be a late start, with the possibility of a continuation into Saturday, although I conceed, it's a hard one for the organisers to call !
Jeff, are you serious? Call it off lol
Not sure about that although would help the annual leave balance at work!
Anyone think with every forecast giving a lot of rain that the game should be called off tonight ? Then most havent wasted a day and it might just possibly add too the crowd friday week.Only my opinion but be shocked if theirs any play before 4 or 5 pm
If the final starts tomorrow and is unable to be completed, then play may continue on Saturday
Senior Cup Final :
Can it not run over onto this Saturday, as I assume neither team have a game?
Reserve date for the Challenge Cup final if no play is possible tomorrow is next Friday, 6th August.
Let's hope the forecasters have got it wrong for Friday!
