Robin, you must be having a rough old day. It would have been a farce trying to play on that wicket – I saw it under water; getting the covers off for a few hours on Sat morning would have made little difference. Stephen asked my opinion at the time and I thought saving everyone from travelling and wasting a day was the right thing to do. Any thoughts of skulduggery are imagined. I share the frustration at not playing on such a nice day but your comments are misguided and a little discourteous.

you should try standing in the slips or at catching gully!! i have worn a few bruises stopping the ball in gully when they fly off the bat after yeatesy has found the edge! at least the keeper has a nice pair of gloves he can use to soften the blow a little when the batsman nicks one!!!

Yes Tommy the more I think about it the more you could be right although I haven't faced Andy on a hard wicket yet so hard to judge for me. Yeates definately has potential to be a great bowler as anyone with his pace will have an advantage. Have to say though I wish there were more out and out quick bowlers around as I love facing them (never hit many runs mind you). The quickest I faced was when I opened for Downpatrick against Waringstown on a few occasions. Gunaratne, who I believe has played for Sri Lanka since, was bowling at mid to high 80's I'm sure. The ball was near black in colour and the fizz of the ball going by my ear and the force of it hitting the bat was something else. Moreover, I didnt wear a thigh guard and I was hit twice that day! It was an enjoyable experience.

It is all getting a bit fiesty on here and for once i am not involved in it.

Regards fast bowlers i am not sure you can include the likes of bassett, yeates etc as being quick. Yes they may be some of the quickest about in the NCU lower leagues at the minute but in comparison with the quickest in the north west or Leinster they are milirary medium.

Long gone are the days when i was first playing senior cricket, mark patterson, eagy at his quickest just to name a couple, Those guys were much much sharper than andy bassett will ever be, fair play to the season he is having at dundrum this year the amount of wickets he has taken are very impressive.

Good medium pace bowlers yes, good fast bowlers no.( I wonder if andy will bend his back a bit more on his return to strangford road on satuday.

Big local derby on saturday, the usual added spice no doubt. Actually who am i trying to kid we probably get on better with the dundrum boys than we do with any other team in the league.

as a section 3 player yeates is definately the quickest i have seen and that includes watching a few premier league games. When you see the keeper standing yards from the boundary thats when you know you are in trouble!

good call Rodney......Andy Bassett is a very good bowler who not only can bowl quick but is very accurate too. aint seen him bowl yet this year but the scorecards never lie and he has taken a bag of wickets. i still think Yeates might be a bit quicker, especially on the harder wickets at Saintfield. dont think Andy enjoyed bowling at me last year at Saintfield but he still pushed the ball through very quick coming up the hill and bowled very well to get 5 wickets that day.

RE Quick Bowlers

It depends what we class as quick but I would have to say that Andy Bassett has been not only the quickest I've seen this year but also the best which is ironic because Lee Connor was the best quick bowler in the section last year but has been injured this year. It would be interesting to compare speeds as I dont think McKenna or Gill would be as quick as Bassett (only my opinion as I faced Gill on Saturday and havent seen McKenna bowl in a while). Another guy that has caught my eye has been Craig Drummond from Muckamore. He is deceptively quicker than he looks and is still very young.

Robin, it was Bangor we played at the Green, not Derriaghy.

Robin we had no issue with playing a game on Saturday. The only player missing was Tony Adams who was away on his brothers stag do, if you think that was the real reason we called it off. Cheers for calling me a liar too!

While, having spoken to several North Down players on Saturday, it would appear thet CIYMS were premature in calling Saturday's match off, under Competition Rule 20b where umpires have been appointed a decision to call off a game in advance of the scheduled starting time can only have been made with the agreement of BOTH clubs. If such an agreement cannot be reached, then both teams turn up at the appointed time, and the umpires make the decision on whether the ground is playable or not.

We had a similar situation with the Bangor v Instonians match earlier in the season. If they have any doubt the visiting team should insist on travelling, and they have no comeback if they do not exercise this right.

Robin, if you saw the state of the square and outfield on Thursday and Friday following the heavy rain there was no chance of playing a proper game of cricket on Saturday, which was the same on Sunday even playing on the mat! I would have thought the extra days rest before the Senior Cup semi final on Sunday and not having to play a game which would have been played in worse conditions than your first game of the season against Lisburn would have been more beneficial to yourselves! With regards last year, you have forgotten very quickly that we reversed our home fixture to play yourselves at the Green, as if we hadn't it would have been a no result and CSNI would have won the league! Hopefully that fox gets lost in the long grass!!

Dunno if you have seen Mark Yeates or not? plays for Saintfield. he can bowl very sharpish and on his day can trouble most batsmen. when he gets it spot on he can be impossible to play. Ross Boultwood has also returned to Saintfield and is another very good quick bowler for the future. i think both lads are still under the age of 20

looks were not deceiving uncovered wicket was super only reason the covered wicket was damp because no one was there to take covers off and let the sun do its work
