Re Simon

Yes I played in that competition which was sponsored by 'Stimmerol' chewing gum! From memory it wasn't a great spectator sport with high jump landing mats protecting people on the balcony. Good fun to play in though.
Can also remember you being annoyed at being given out caught to a ball that temporarily lodged in the netting.
Needless to say the speed you bowled at in those days you proceeded to get your own back in the second innings!

Successful completion of course and examinations will allow you to stand at matches. This can be confirmed by talking to my colleagues Trevor Magee or Keith Smith who put in some very hard work in putting this course together. Again I would encourage anyone with time on their hands to attend this course as we are looking for Umpires who can cover Sunday matches, school matches and 20/20 matches. We are not asking you to give up your Saturday game. If interested please contact me at any time.

Just to reinforce Ryan's message, when we played 6-a-side cricket at the Shankill Leisure Centre back in the 70's, it was very popular and only stopped because the manager at the time moved away and the new one wouldn't allocate the time to cricket. It was a great way of warming up for the season ahead and we discovered all sorts of talents. The most notable probably being David Heaney's opening batting technique, which mainly consisted of what came to be known as the frying pan shot - long before T20 batting methods !
Enter a team - you will enjoy.

Missing playing cricket......already !

Johnathan,

Just a query, by attending the two day course next spring, does that entitle or allow you to stand as an official umpire at any N.C.U. match or indeed anywhere, or is there a bit more to it than that ?

I've found myself quite alot this season standing out in the middle and umpiring at our own matches and I must say, I have found this most enjoyable, before I would have usually been happy enough to do the score book, again another aspect of the game I enjoy, but the younger players tend to do this now, so it's the 'white coat' for me !

Although those blue shirts... do look smart indeed !!!

The Northern Ireland Association of Cricket Umpires and Scorers Annual General Meeting will take place on Monday 11th October 2010 at the Pavilion, Stormont. This meeting is open to all members of the Association and we would especially ask any one interested in joining the Association to contact any member of the Executive Committee. It is the intention of the Association to host a two day training course for prospective umpires in the spring of 2011 and details will be posted as soon as they are available. It is also our intention to host a course for Scorers but this will depend on numbers. I would encourage Premier League and Section One Clubs to promote this course as many scorers need to be updated on laws and bye laws of the local game. Perhaps one of the most interesting facts for propective officials is the chance to umpire/score at a higher level and the door is firmly open. So you have a chance to go beyond the shores of our island.

Thanks to Wylie for clearing things up. I am dismayed at P Carpenter as I can assure him that Cooke Collegians were indeed looking forward to travelling to Armagh. We are a club with pride and confidence and are not afraid to take something on. I am delighted that our 2nd XI have gone up along with Armagh and winning the league is an added bonus but let me be clear my club was quite keen to play and only the weather prevented the game from being completed. I do not know who P Carpenter is but you should simply forget about this matter and get on with things. The season is over and it was a great summer in the fact that we had opportunity to play so many games. Let me be clear I am not representing any opinion from my club. I am just angry on a personal basis at some very silly comments.

P. Carpenter is mostly correct in his summing up of the Armagh II v Cooke Collegians II match.

The only thing I would correct is that Cooke Collegians had in fact won the league and the best Armagh could have gained was to share in winning the league.

I have been saying for a long time that the voluntary re-arrangement regulations open up the possibility of a team "tactically" chossing not to play a re-arranged game if it suits them too.

(Not that I am implying that Cooke Collegians choose this option to deny Armagh a chance of a share of the league I would like to point out)

You will also notice that Armagh had another game that was voided from earlier in the season as neither they or Templepatrick contacted me to re-arrange this game and when it went over the 21 days to agree a re-arrangement I voided that game as it was made plain to me that Templepatrick were not interested in re-arranging it.

re. Jonathan Lyttle

The Armagh v Cooke Collegians game was not void when it was rained off on Sat. 18th September, but subject to a voluntary rearrangement as per the Union rulebook. Cooke Collegians opted to win the league by default rather than on the field but that was their perogative.

As mentioned by the editor earlier and particularly applicable to "Fair Play" and Jason Maxwell as well as Mr Lyttle, posters should stick to facts rather than opinions or accusations.

With reference to the Armagh v Cooke Collegians fixture, the game was void when it was not played on the Saturday as agreed. This should be the end of the matter and if anyone wishes to continue this debate they should consult the Section Secretary. The season is over and the results have been submitted. There are more important matters to be discussed on this forum.

Section 1 team of the year and why!

1) W Horwood (Muckamore) Never a dull moment when he bats!

2) S Johnston (Woodvale) Hits a huge ball!

3) M Hutchinson (Bangor) Superb batsmen whose team batted around him in both our games with them this season!

4) B Baguely (Muckamore) Another hard hitter and a great batsman!

5)P McCormick (Hollywood) Didn't play against him this year but consistently got runs and wickets!

6)C Boultwood (wk)(S'field) got runs along with some superb keeping!

7) A Whitcroft (Armagh) our best bowler this season and always looked like taking wickets!

8) H Doyle (Armagh) although it probably looks like I'm picking him simply because he is my brother he bowled better this season than the stats suggest , should have taken a lot more wickets and scored some valuable runs!

9) A Magennis (L'Vale) good leg spinner with an impressive quicker ball!

10)M Yeates (S'field) quickest bowler in the league and a real handful on a hard track!

11) R Bell (Bangor) swings the ball both ways and took a lot of wickets!

Definitely not the best team statistically just my opinion!

PS. In reference to the Cooke vs Armagh 2nd XI fixture who are these 'heap of de-starrings'?

Would be nice if you could put a name to your comments!
