Nice one James. We have to assume nobody goes to hear the speakers despite what the editor writes. I'm old enough to remember wee Victor and Brian White and they were very entertaining. Maybe there is no speaker this year? I haven't been to an NCU dinner for years and obviously there are a few others around like me.

Re Dinner.

Announced today, apparently its a former principal of RBAI which will doubtlessly spark a last minute ticket scramble.

Perhaps the Union should get some of the good folk from Lurgan CC to help them with bookings, because the guest speakers for the last few versions of their Sportsmans Dinner have been top drawer cricket personalities.

Are the NCU thinking of announcing who the speaker is at their dinner?
Or have they and I missed it?

Yes it will be good to get a few derbies with yourselves and saintfield next season, i have to say i would prefer to be still playing in the premier league but it will add a bit of spice for sure.

Robin,
Yes, I think about 1976, as the Shankill LC only opened then. ( Are you that old Robin ? - I always remember you as a young fella ! )

To any cricket groundsmen wondering what do in the winter months you should have a look at www.pitchcare.com

It is an excellent website which will provide you with plenty of good advice/information on squares and outfields

Indoor 6 a side
Go for it guys!! Great fun, and the original "frying pan" is still in the attic (alongside a real frying pan with Dundan Fearnley motifs appended, courtesy of Mr Corlett who obviously appreciates the finer points of the game!!!!)

Davy,

A few changes have been made to Shankill LC since the last tournament. A windowed viewing gallery / new impact floor / quality lighting and new mats will ensure the facility is at its best for the 6s league.

I would like to appeal to potential sides to get in touch.

PS bring the family to the centre, it has a wave machine pool and other great facilities on offer.

Now that the summers well gone and the nights grow ever longer, halloween only a few weeks away, I composed a little spooky story on the Victoria C.C. website V.J. blog.

Concerning a batman's laments and how he can never trouble the scorers time & time again, click onto it if you've a spare 5mins and have a read... but I would'nt leave it to late or be on your own ... if I was you !

Re Simon

Yes I played in that competition which was sponsored by 'Stimmerol' chewing gum! From memory it wasn't a great spectator sport with high jump landing mats protecting people on the balcony. Good fun to play in though.
Can also remember you being annoyed at being given out caught to a ball that temporarily lodged in the netting.
Needless to say the speed you bowled at in those days you proceeded to get your own back in the second innings!

Vic

Successful completion of course and examinations will allow you to stand at matches. This can be confirmed by talking to my colleagues Trevor Magee or Keith Smith who put in some very hard work in putting this course together. Again I would encourage anyone with time on their hands to attend this course as we are looking for Umpires who can cover Sunday matches, school matches and 20/20 matches. We are not asking you to give up your Saturday game. If interested please contact me at any time.

Just to reinforce Ryan's message, when we played 6-a-side cricket at the Shankill Leisure Centre back in the 70's, it was very popular and only stopped because the manager at the time moved away and the new one wouldn't allocate the time to cricket. It was a great way of warming up for the season ahead and we discovered all sorts of talents. The most notable probably being David Heaney's opening batting technique, which mainly consisted of what came to be known as the frying pan shot - long before T20 batting methods !
Enter a team - you will enjoy.
