SERIAL 7 - ABSURD?
The proposal for a modest payment from the senior clubs who register non-local players may appear "absurd" in your opinion, but not in the opinion of the 50% of the vote (including at least one premier league team) who voted in favour. Just think Clarence, if it had been merely "silly" rather "absurd" it may well have passed!
The point is this - some teams in the lower leagues are struggling with coaching, grounds etc. Some may be struggling to keep going. The payment was linked to clubs who appear relaxed about paying thousands of pounds which goes into the pockets of non- locals and is taken out of the area. This is not a criticism of either the cubs nor the players, merely a factual observation. A second observation is that all top clubs have benefitted from the young stars of lower league clubs. How much the value of a couple of Nelsons and a few Dennisons to Waringstown? Was Andy White worth £300 to North Down?
No 'smaller' clubs producing young cricketers - less young cricketers to go to the bigger clubs - more reliance on non-local players.
I know which of the two is more absurd - in my opinion.
Winter well.

Re James
CIYMS surprisingly also voted in favour of the two overseas players motion.
Re NCU AGM
So Premier League teams only allowed two players from outside union area - this is sure to hurt certain clubs especially ones with NW men like Waringstown and CI. Inst and North Down sure to be unhappy with this serial being passed.
North-West players are unaffected by the ruling and are free to continue to ply their trade in the NCU, as the Union Area is 'the North of Ireland' according to their constitution.
Waringstown and North Down both voted in favour of the motion!
Whilst by & large the motions proposed and passed at last night's N.C.U. AGM seem to me on the whole to make good sense, I must confess to being somewhat dismayed by what appears to be a rejection of Serial 7 by the majority of Premier and Section 1 cricket clubs.
Proposed by D.C.D.D. : In accordance with the number of registered players residing outside the union and playing in the Premier and section 1 leagues with whichever respective club, a small but helpful financial contribution should be paid by said clubs to go towards a fund to help assist in the progression and development of cricket within the ranks of their fellow lower sibling teams in sections 2 and 3 who play in the leagues below them.
Alas this was rejected, thus in other words as I see it, they ( premier & section 1 ) will continue to pay additional cricket players above and beyond the allotted 1 x overseas profession/coach who do not normally reside and work within the union, unconnected with cricket to further their own aims and ambitions regardless of cost, but whatever happens beneath section 1 is neither their worry, concern or problem !
Dearie, dearie me, elitism and supercilious attitudes seem to be still very much alive and kicking in the upper echelons of our cricket society I fear !
Whatever next ?
I must confess Caleb that when I begin the many hours of hard work involved in our fundraising ventures for next season I will be happy with the fact that the proceeds will be going to my own club, does that make me a bad person?
Interestingly an amendment to the proposal which would have seen the money put into a central fund to pay for a union development officer to benefit all clubs was rejected, primarily by votes from Sections 2 and 3!!!
Of course if any of the clubs close by to us would like to seek any assistance with coaching/education/equipment or anything else then they know my mobile number/email address and we will be more than accommodating where possible!

Ivor:
It obviously wasn't 'pre-agreed' - if it had been it would have been put forward by the management board as the other serials were.
I was suprised to see the motion to allow for matches to be reduced to 40 overs in junior 1 if pre agreed withdrawn from the AGM. I dont understand the logic is still having one junior league with 50 over matches.
I hear CIYMS are getting Van Der Dussen back next season. If they can land Jonny Thompson and a few others maybe they will be early favourites for the Premier League.
If Ervine plays for Zimbabwe again in Test Match or ODI does that rule him out of playing in NCU?
Jeff, not sure the length of games is the only issue. There are other factors like time travelling, conflict with schools, culture of the game, starting times etc etc. It's not fair to generalize as the growth of golf amongst younger players in the modern era is phenomenal. Indeed amongst families as well. We need to look at all the factors. And if two teams still want to play 40 overs there's always that option.
50 years down the line? The only thing we know with certainty is that we won't be here. LOL
ryan NO as we went to section one meeting even tho we were relegated. It was discussed at section two meeting and from what I was told the clubs can reduce if they want 40 overs? Think unless young players start wanting 50 overs its madness in lower sections since we joined NCU 50 years ago over 20 teams have quit and ill bet in another 50 years it will be similar ? Kids have far to many sports that are shorter and I just think it should be 40 overs.
Jeff, did Dundrum propose the reduction of Section 2 to 40 over games?
I was saddened to hear about the passing away of my friend and colleague Judith Hewitt. She was an inspiration to us all and I feel that cricket has lost a great woman who brought so much to the game and was a pleasure to score with. The fun and humour was quite rare at times but you felt that scoring was an exciting day out when you were with Judith. I know that we have lost a lady who promised much and to Jonathan and family I pass on my most sincere sympathy and my thoughts and prayers are with you all.
Yes, very sad about Judith. She was a lovely person and fought a long and brave fight against impossible odds.
Sincere condolences to Johnny and her family and friends.
CIYMS looking at some new faces with Johnny Thompson top of their list. Other names include Zach Rushe and Ryan Eagleson as player/Coach.
it is with sorrow that I learn of the death of Judith Hewitt and I extend my sincere sympathy to Jonny and the family circle.
Well said Davy Greenlees!
