Jason--Close but Jimmy's English the three were born & bred in our own wee country, try again and he put the game on the map or should I say colour T.V.
Re: Vic Jons
is the one who played with one ball Jimmy White???
to the "englishman" a tune you know quite well i believe, did you play any cricket over in derbyshire or were you in any of the england youth teams.i suppose you find it harder to play on the slower wickets over hear.
Gareth,
I think you're wrong there. Britain only exists where people do not use the correct name - Great Britain. Anyway, knowing a bit about Rory's background Rory will probably class himself as Irish, therefore confusing a lot of you as to whether you are British or Irish! Enough of this drivel.. Does anyone know what state Stormont is in after the rain - I mean the ground and not the big building on the hill where the folks live.
REF ; Vic Jons
I don,t think anyone at your club could help on that score ,especially the pro as he,s only interested in the tea & sandwiches
REF ; Andy Kennedy
What,s it like to be perfect ? with all your good grammer & spelling maybe you should apply for Countdown ?? Andy its time for you to come home , all this whinging they might make you an honorary Englishman and then you will be crowing about the great Ashes victory !!
Three of the best
Just before I head out, I'll throw more fuel on the patriotic fire burning brightly!
Three men, roughly from the same era two of which are sadly no longer with us, all from these shores, known throughout the world as sporting genius'es and responsible for putting more 'bums on seats' than anyother sportsman/team!
Who would I be referring too,Gerry,Mr English Cont'ent or anybody else hazzard a guess?
Clue... One played with a ball, One played with 22 balls the other rode on two wheels, but boy did he have 'balls'!
Come on Ireland, lets show them the steel!
re: English Contingent
I could be wrong but my understanding was that Northern Ireland is not part of Great Britain but is part of Britain as Britain is a short term for the United Kingdom. Meaning that Rory McIlroy can (and probably will) soon be Britain's top golfer.
Carry on....
"I think England were using overseas players long before Ireland started climbing the ladder - Greig, Hick, Lamb, Croft, etc. Funny how the media seems to ignore this on this occasion." - So what are the media actually commenting on Andy? - Nothing. It's you who is going on about the immigrants no-one else. Maybe you have a racist side to you... Anti English perhaps? And does it matter that England had them before Ireland?
"As for not being part of Britain - well I'll forgive your'e ignorance." - Andy, actually it is you that is being ignorant - You and I live in The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. You talk of a night in Windsor Park - was that the night that Iceland hammered Norn Iron? 3-0 or do you have selective memory too?
Further to Messeur's Mallin & English C'ent
I'll even put my international cricket media reputation on the line and publicly state on this forum, the only reason Ireland are not a top cricketing nation and remember we have the smallest land mass and least population of all the cricketing nations. Is because; "It never stops bloody raining"! in our wee country.
I'm going up the park now to bowl at the single stump and to cool off. (In the rain).
English contingent - I think England were using overseas players long before Ireland started climbing the ladder - Greig, Hick, Lamb, Croft, etc. Funny how the media seems to ignore this on this occasion. To hear Nasser Hussain (another native Englishman) and David Lloyd almost orgasmic on Sunday was, to me, a really good laugh. As for not being part of Britain - well I'll forgive your'e ignorance. A visiting English colleague once asked' in all seriousness at Aldergrove, if we drove on the left in Ireland(!) Maybe some of the older forumites will recall how John Watson always was described as "British" when he won a Grand Prix.
Enjoy the moment - you haven't had too many in the last 4 years - not forgetting a certain November evening at Windsor Park!! Ah memories - they thought it was all over - it was then!!
To Gerry Mallin
Here here Gerry enough is enough, can't let you away with that. I realise that you are probably new to the forum and obviously don't know that much about cricket!
To cascade our national team on the eve of a famous match on local soil as second rate is tantamount to heiracy. It's a good job for you that you are an unknown cricket lightweight as otherwise I'd be sending our 'pro' and legandary fast bowler round to pay you a quick visit!
Then maybe you'd start and see sence and learn a bit about CRICKET ! ! !
re Gerry - think you totally missed the points I was making - never mentioned Ireland and Pakistan. I was referring to the English technique of getting their victories in sport - of which there haven't been too many - out of perspective. Also i really enjoy your spelling!
Andy,
Ha Ha Ha. This comes from someone who I have to assume, supports Ireland with all their 'Irish' Players like Regan West - Kiwi, Botha - South African, Cusack - Aussie, Johnston - Aussie. Never mid those players who aspire to play for England like Ed Joyce, Niall O'Brien, etc.. Your team can't keep players that wish to play for England, so you have to resort to calling up 'immigrants' - as you put it. So am i right in saying that your supporting a bunch of immigrants tomorrow? 1-2 minutes for bringing gloves on hardly constitutes mentioning, and if your arguing that point, then I feel sorry for you.
Give up your whinging. I never said bring on the world. We are likely to get duffed in South Africa later this year, but hey, I will live with that. We beat the Aussie's fair and square - or maybe you will singlehandedly go through each individual umpires decision in Englands favour and find fault in them! It was a close series, and several Australians had better figures, but, when England got it together they did it well. It is obvious. "Australia performed better as individuals" - Andy, you cannot win anything as individuals, surely in the hills around Buckna you know that - thats why its called a team and the more runs you get as a team the better chance of winning you have and thats what we did. You can't argue with the scorebook. As an Englishman on Sunday, I was proud of what they did. Something you may never be able to experience. One more thing, Rory McIlroy can never become Britains top golfer because he is from Northern Ireland. Northern Ireland isn't part of Britain. Education is a wonderful thing Andy...
REF;Andy Kennedy
It doesn,t matter about averages or champagne moments the records will show in 2009 England [some team] won the Ashes, the convicts can go back to Van Demons land with there tail between there legs and as for world beaters was this not the same when Ireland beat Pakistan in the last world cup everyone knows that was a freak result !!!
lets face it Ireland are div.2 when it comes to international cricket.
re England contingent - here we go again - England win something and its "bring on the world"!! - they beat an emerging Australian side with a team of featuring a pile of "immigrants". Short memories after 2005 - went to Oz and lost the series narrowly 5-0! As for Ponting's "cold sores" - was that not an on-field injury? or is such mere detail lost in the euphoria of the moment. I'm surprised that the posting didn't also remind us about 1966 or the Rugby world cup! Australia performed better as individuals - look at the series averages and lost the Ashes narrowly -maybe the running on with gloves in one of the Tests to slow things down is forgotten. The series turned on 2 or 3 champagne moments and was a lot closer than the English press will admit. I wonder how many more wins "Northen Ireland's" Rory McIlroy has to achieve before he before he becomes "Britain's" top golfer?
