ULSTER BANK SCHOOLS’ CUP

4 May 2007

Holders RBAI are through to the second round of the Ulster Bank Schools’ Cricket Cup but last year’s beaten finalists, Regent House, have fallen at the first hurdle.

Belfast side began with a convincing 8-wicket defeat of Limavady Grammar but in the North Down derby Regent went down heavily to Bangor Grammar by 119 runs.

Belfast “Inst’s” second eleven are also through to the second round.  In one of the major upsets so far, they defeated Friends’ School by 17 runs.

In the most intriguing match of the round Foyle and Londonderry College defeated Strabane High School by 13 runs – thanks to an unbeaten eighth wicket stand of 64 in six overs in which one of the batsmen scored only two.  William McCleery provided the support while Ken Kitson scored the runs, with 10 fours and five sixes taking him to an undefeated 96.  Strabane finished just 13 short on 173 for 8 despite an opening partnership of 102 during which Ricky-Lee Dougherty and Steven Wallace both scored half centuries.
