NEW ERA FOR IRISH CRICKET

3 February 2008

A new era in Irish cricket began today with the formal dissolution of the Irish Cricket Union during its AGM in Dundalk

A new steamlined Board will be in charge of the new 'Irish Cricket Union Limited ', although a final trading name is yet to be settled upon.

There will be 11 members in total, seven of which have been nominated by the various Provincial Unions, and four independent directors, recommended by a Nominations committee.

David Williams will be the Chairman of the Board, with Joe Doherty representing the North West Cricket Union, Wylie Mc Kinty and Richard Johnson from the Northern Cricket Union , Arthur Vincent and Matt Sheridan from the Leinster Cricket Union , and James Doran from the Munster Cricket Union.

The four independent Directors are

- Jerry Liston - a former Chief Executive of United Drug; former Executive Chairman of the Michael Smurfit Graduate School of Business; former Chairman of the both the Irish Managment Institute and Marketing Society; and current Chairman of the Irish Aviation Authority.

- Dr Mary Redmond - a former Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ireland; former non-Executive Director of Jefferson Smurfit Group; one of Ireland's leading employment lawyers; a member of the Taoiseach's Taskforce on Active Citizenship; and current Chair of FM4.

- Brian Turtle - a former President of the IRFU (Ulster); former senior partner and current consultant to Larson McDowell Solicitors; Board member of Cambrata Ireland and member of the Walker Cup Committee at Royal County Down golf club, which he also captained.

- Allan Rutherford - a former international cricketer and captain of Ireland; former Chairman and member of the ICU's Cricket Committee; and managing director of his own company.

Chairman David Williams is looking forward to heading up the new company saying, "The new company will streamline our operation, and be a sign of the increasing professionalism that is needed in modern sport. We are very lucky to have such a talented Chief Executive in place in Warren Deutrom. We are also recruiting staff, and we look forward to have in place a professional administration to carry out the wishes of the Board at a very early date."

Williams was also delighted at the composition of the Board, "We have a wide range of expertise at our disposal, and I'm confident that the future of Irish cricket is in very capable hands."

Outgoing Chairman Dr Murray Power and ICU Secretary John Wright were both given a great reception by the members, and thanked for their long and distinguished service.

Power said on his leaving of office, " It has been a huge privilege to conclude almost 32 years' membership of the Executive Committee by chairing the Union during the past two momentous years. It would not have been possible without the support of an excellent committee, which consistently approached a very challenging range of issues in a constructive and forward thinking way, and the unstinting hard work of the officers and the Chief Executive. I wish my successor, David Williams, and his new Board every success."

The new President of the Union is Ballymena man John Caldwell, who has been involved in cricket for over 50 years. He is a former Chairman of both the NCU and ICU, and also served for 2 years as President of the NCU. He has also been the Chairman of the ICU's Strategic Planning Committee which has been pivotal in the development of Irish cricket over the past 10 years.

"I'm delighted to have been chosen as President of Irish cricket. It's a great honour for both my club Ballymena, and the Northern Cricket Union. I'd like to pay tribute to my predecessor Tom Prior, who has done a fantastic job, and he will be a very difficult act to follow."

Arthur Vincent from the Leinster Union was proposed and accepted as President Elect.
