As a result his company is to sponsor the competition for the next five years making it the longest sponsorship in the Union’s history.
The exciting 20 overs tournament will now be known as the Metal Technology Twenty/20 Cup involving teams in the NCU’s top two sections. In addition the company will sponsor a shield competition featuring half a dozen sides from Section 3 and 4.
Mr. McKnight is managing director of the Antrim-based architectural aluminium systems company, which specialises in the design and distribution of windows, doors and curtain walling.
He recalled last year’s finals at today’s launch of his company’s sponsorship: “It was a terrific day out with the two semi finals and final played on the same day at Comber. And, of course, the short form of the game makes for really exciting cricket.
“It’s not surprising that the format as well as three games in the day attract one of the biggest crowds of the season and our company is, therefore, keen to ensure the tournament’s future.”
But there was one disappointment for the McKnight family in last year’s final – 20 year-old son Ben ended up on the losing side as Waringstown went down to North Down.
“Not to worry – cricket was the winner on the day”, said Mr. McKnight.
The chairman of the NCU, Billy Boyd, said players and supporters would be delighted with the sponsorship news.
He said: “This will be the third year of the competition and Metal Technology’s support will now guarantee it will continue to be one of the highlights of our fixture list. Most our sponsors tend to commit for three years so five years by the company is a real bonus.”
Four teams will compete in each of four groups and the play-offs will be staged on the two grounds at Shaw’s Bridge, Belfast, on July 6.
