IRELAND WOMEN DEFEAT NOTTINGHAMSHIRE AND SUSSEX

3 August 2015

Ireland Women enjoyed double success in their T20 campaign as they recorded back-to-back victories over Nottinghamshire and Sussex.

Cecelia Joyce top scored with 30 as Ireland posted what looked a very modest 109 for 5 in the morning game against Notts.

Mary Waldron scored a very valuable 23 at the end, while Laura Delany (24) and Clare Shillington (18) chipped in with important contributions.

However, the Notts batters found boundaries as elusive as the Irish, and a superb bowling and fielding display saw them restricted to just 81 for 8.

Louise McCarthy (2-10) was the pick of the attack, while Kim Garth (2-12) also picked up two wickets, and Lucy O'Reilly and Ciara Metcalfe each took 1 for 14.

In the afternoon game against Sussex, Ireland got off to a flying start as Clare Shillington hit 42 from just 40 deliveries, while there were entertaining cameos from Gaby Lewis (18), Cecelia Joyce (28) and Laura Delany (18*) in their total of 133 for 5.

It proved just enough as Lucy O'Reilly claimed two wickets in the final over to seal the six run win.

The wins will serve as a timely confidence boost for Ireland ahead of the three match T20 international series against Australia later this month.

The games take place at YMCA on August 19, 21 and 22.
