IRELAND 'A' SQUAD

17 June 2009

Ireland have named a squad of 12 for their fixture with a Yorkshire XI due to take place at Weetwood College, Leeds, from June 23-25.

Nigel Jones from Civil Service North will captain the side, which apart from himself includes six other players who have represented Ireland at senior level.

18 year old Paul Stirling is the only player included who took part in the recent ICC World Twenty20.

There is a strong emphasis on youth in the squad, a fact acknowledged by Ireland ‘A’ coach Adrian Birrell: “I’m delighted with the composition of the twelve. The selectors see these players as the future of Irish cricket, and this fixture is a great way of getting them experience of multi-day cricket.”

“It’s an ideal shop window for the players to impress Phil Simmons, with forthcoming Intercontinental cup games against Kenya in July and Scotland in August. There is a good balance in the team with plenty of bowling options. We’ll be playing against a pretty strong Yorkshire XI, with a mix primarily of second XI and Academy players. They scored 332 for 4 on the first day of their three day game with Scotland ‘A’ today, so they have real quality. The game will be 12 versus 12, so everyone selected will feature.”

“We are also boosted by the availability of both Peter and Trent Johnston on the coaching side, while Gavin Craig will manage the squad.”

The squad in full is as follows:

  • Nigel Jones (capt) (Civil Service North)
  • Andrew Balbirnie (Pembroke)
  • Andrew Britton (Fox Lodge)
  • Allen Coulter (Civil Service North)
  • Chris Dougherty (Bready)
  • Phil Eaglestone (Strabane)
  • Shane Getkate (Malahide)
  • James Hall (Waringstown)
  • Gary Kidd (Waringstown)
  • FintanMcAllister (Malahide)
  • Andrew Poynter (Clontarf)
  • Paul Stirling (Carrickfergus)
  • Adrian Birrell (Coach)
  • Gavin Craig (Manager)
  • Peter Johnston (Assistant Coach/video analyst)
  • Trent Johnston (Bowling Coach)
