GLENDERMOTT SECURE TOP SOUTH AFRICAN AS PLAYER /COACH

30 January 2009

Glendermott's new player/coach for 2009 Carl Pietersen (26) is a South African born opening bowler and middle order batsman...

...who played two seasons for Northants in County Cricket under the Kolpak regulations.

He hit the headlines turning in an awesome performance in taking 7 for 10 in a C&G Trophy match against Denmark in 2005. Pietersen has also been performing well in the SAA Provincial Challenge in South Africa for Griqualand West and has improved dramatically as a batsman with a first class average of 24.14 - however, his past two domestic seasons have resulted in averages of 45.50 and 37.00.

Pietersen also finished the 2007/08 season as one of the leading pace bowlers in South Africa - 29 wickets at 14.55 including three 5-wicket hauls. Glendermott’s new man is a former South African U19 player and has played several seasons in the UK, with Loughborough Town in the Leicestershire Premier League before those two seasons at Northants and a spell with Maidenhead in the Thames Valley League.

Carl is also a UCBSA level 2 coach and Club secretary John Bratton explained that over the past few months there had been feedback from club members and players that the time had come to replace Hasan Raza as professional and go down the route of bringing a qualified player/ coach instead.

Pietersen will work with all groups from youth teams right up to senior level, and will also be expected to go into local schools and run coaching clinics. Glendermott feel that Carl Pietersen is the ideal person to move the club in the right direction, developing the local talent already at the club as well as trying to attract more young players to the Rectory.
Gordon Montgomery has taken on the role as 1st XI captain with Bob Robinson his deputy, and both players alongside Johnny Thompson have important roles to play more so as the club is looking to get back to producing home grown players and will be giving youth their chance.

Garth spoke at the AGM and decided it was time for him to step down from 1st XI cricket and focus now with the 2nds who for the past few seasons have struggled mainly due to the lack of experience within the team. Garth felt the 2nds needed a few experienced players to help the team and the club elected Garth as 2nd XI Captain with another experienced player Stephen Montgomery taking on the vice captain duties. Hopefully Glendermott 2nds can now be more competitive in Intermediate A.
