DWYER BACK IN THE FOLD

20 May 2008

Cricket Ireland has announced that former assistant coach Matt Dwyer, who stood down after the 2007 Cricket World Cup, has been appointed coach of the Ireland Under 19 squad that will contest the European Championships in Scotland in August.

Matt's appointment comes in the wake of Brian O'Rourke's declaration that he is unavailable for the campaign because of other cricket duties and the appointment of Matt, along with Manager Brian Walsh will be on a temporary basis until the end of the season - all under age coaching and managerial appointments are reviewed on an annual basis, usually in the autumn.

Chairman of Cricket, Joe Doherty, said, "We are delighted that Matt has agreed to step in for this important task at short notice and we are confident that his vast international experience, both playing and coaching will be of enormous benefit to our Under 19 squad."

"These young men represent the future of Irish cricket from an indigenous angle and it is essential that they are exposed to the methods and rigours of the senior international scene in a structured and imaginative way.  The involvement of people with Matt's pedigree, working along with the National Coach, who will have overall responsibility for the squad, can only help that conditioning process and ensure the graduation of our best young players to the full international squad in a sensible and timely manner."
