CURRY WINS RADIO FOYLE AWARD

21 July 2008

Decker Curry has won the BBC Radio Foyle-Bank of Ireland Sports Personality of the Month Award for June

Ritchie Kelly (Radio Foyle), Desmond Curry (Limavady CC), Ian Stone (Commercial Manager, Bank of Ireland).

In a month when cricketers dominated the local headlines, it was the veteran Limavady player who proved that there was plenty of life left in him yet, with some stunning performances.

During the month he helped the Roesiders to the finals of both the North-West Senior Cup and the Ulster Cup with some stunning victories.

They also recorded three vital league wins to keep in touch with Donemana at the top of Senior One.

And the contribution of Des Curry was significant as Limavady rolled over most opposition. Indeed he made significant contributions with both bat and ball and during the month he took sixteen wickets and hit 204 runs - not bad for a man many felt was in the twilight of his career.

But the performance which put the icing on the cake came on the penultimate day of June when, playing against his former side Donemana in the semi-final of the North-West Senior Cup, Curry hit 113 runs, took five wickets and three outstanding catches as he produced a man of the match display to oust his former club from the North-West's main knockout competition.

Indeed while those statistics are magnfiicent in their own right, his dismissal of James McBrine with a breath-taking one handed catch low to his left had the massive crowd in attendance at The Holm in awe.

This award will add to the many Des Curry has claimed before in an illustrious career and he's now in line for the Radio Foyle Sports Personality of the Year Award, which will be announced at the beginning of 2009.
