BOB KERR MEMORIAL TRUST FUND

22 May 2008

The North West Cricket Union have today announced details of the Bob Kerr Memorial Trust Fund, established earlier this year in Bob’s memory by the Kerr family, under the leadership of Mrs Hope Kerr

The fund will be administered by a Panel consisting of representatives of the Kerr family and the North West of Ireland Cricket Union.

The purpose of the Fund will be to assist the development of cricket in the North West of Ireland through the offices of the North West of Ireland Cricket Union, affiliated to Cricket Ireland.

The Bob Kerr Memorial Fund is aimed at sports people who are seeking to establish cricket as a sport in areas hitherto unserved or inadequately served by organised cricket. Funding will also be considered in the case of established individuals aspiring to higher level competition - for example, players preparing for Regional/County/Provincial/National standard competition.

Preference will be given to projects that assist the development of cricket in the North West region.

The Panel will pay particular attention to those areas of cricket that cater for the underdeveloped and impoverished areas of the sport in the North West, for example schools cricket, cricket for the disabled, boys, girls, and women’s cricket and cricket in areas where the game has not been traditionally played.

The Fund will also seek to assist the enhancement of representative teams from the North West region and the participation of talented cricketers from the North West at a higher level of cricket, for example for national or other tours.

Bob KerrSpeaking at the launch, North West Chairman Joe Doherty said "We in NWCU are delighted that the Bob Kerr Memorial Fund has commenced business and we look forward to the Fund helping the good work of our Development Committee. We intend that their work will assist the Development Committee to achieve the objectives set out in the Union's Strategic Plan by looking favourably on applications and suggestions from affiliated clubs and others in respect of projects that can spread and sustain the growth of cricket in the North West. Bob Kerr, in his lifetime, believed passionately in the safeguarding and strengthening of cricket in non-traditional areas and in the support for talented young cricketers who were striving to compete at higher levels. It is gratifying that through the continuing generosity of the Kerr family, the Union is being placed in a strong position to carry on that noble work."
