Sad to hear of the death of Dermott. You wrote an honest tribute Clarence.
I wish to recall a North Down Lisburn game when Raman Lamba was playing one of his first games in Ulster.
He had effortlessly moved on to 30 out of 42 when the Lisburn skipper decided it was time to end this little cameo of an innings by introducing Dermott to the attack. First ball was beatifully flighted and pitching on a length, Raman danced to the pitch of the ball and dispatched to the old cycle track. Glares exchanged. A flatter, faster delivery was whipped to the pavilion of the back foot. Glares and mutterings from the bowler!
End of the over the reputed comment from Dermott was,"We don't play our cricket like that over here and you certainly can't expect to continue playing me like that!"
Dermott didn't know it at the time but he had just met another cricketing giant.
It is mentioned how Dermott stood in for Edmonds and Emburey at M/sex- he would have been more than capable of standing in for them on the international circuit as well.

The tribute on here to Dermont Monteith from Clarence Hiles is a great piece of writing about a great cricketer. Clarence like Dermont you say it as it is. I had the "privilege" to be bowled third ball by Dermont playing for Saintfield against Lisburn in 1983. He looked at me as much as to say "I wasted two balls bowling at him". I as a left arm slow bowler was in awe of the man and later that year arrived at Uxbridge to pass away a few hours before a flight home and Dermont was playing for Middlsex against Hampshire. I stayed an extra day just to see how he performed. He hit Malcolm Marshall for six, Brearly gave him the ball in front of Edmonds and Embury and he nodded when he saw me on the boundary. I was even more in awe of him after that. What a player and what a great man to talk to about cricket. I got to know him later as he always stopped to talk to John McCormick a player he rated if we were at international games. I remember seeing a photograph in his front hall of him being presented with his County Championship medal by Price Philip at Lord's. A giant of a man in Irish cricket so brilliantly summed up by Clarence.
So ironic his passing in the same week Kyle retired. Another legendary cricketer but such a different personality.

Sounds like he was another one of those 'sporting genius' people we tend to produce every now and again,in the mould of Alex Higgins,the late Geordie Best and Joey Dunlop.
I would imagine if he had been born English,Meusseurs Embury & Edmonds would be filling in for him at county level,while Dermott was on international duty.

Even so,still an immencely impressive cricketer and a very sad loss indeed,slightly flawed maybe,but is'nt every genius !

davey it was a pleasure to meet you on saturday on the train back from dublin. Great to see a young lad so enthusiastic and good luck with the leggies. Just for clarity I had heard Hutchy is staying where he is. Whatever he does good luck to him. The amount of speculation on this site you would think it was the ronaldo saga all over again!!

very unsure on hutchy! wayne horwood say he is staying put but others say he is coming to the lawn. would be a great addition

Kyle McCallen retires from International cricket

Just like to say what a remarkable career he has enjoyed and a fine servant to the Ireland set up as it evolved from playing select sides to beating the best.

Also a real gentleman and a fine ambassador for cricket. Good luck to him in the future.

Jungle drums from the northwest suggest the class act, namely Charle McCrum who kept Glendermott in Section 1 may not be returning. Apparently the Club 'dithers' over bringing him back and at this golden twilight in his cricketing career he shouldn't be short of offers from prudent NW & NCU teams - form is temporary, class is permanent!

Kulkarni not returning to Armagh? News to us! I'd love to know where the rumourmongers get some of their information.

I have it on good authority that Hutchy is not leaving Bangor.

Also the home advantage could well be a factor in section one, both Woodvale and Muckamore needing to play away from home due to developement work on the squares. Anyone else got the JCB's in that we don't know about?

I hear CI have signed 2 'foreigners' although Heasley and Hewitt are leaving for pastures new, or maybe old?

Dundrum keeping Bassett and Connor will be fit, plus the addition of a pro

Agreed Woodvale may struggle with the loss of Kirkatrick (CSN/Carrick/Ballymena I hear) and no pro (allegedly). Don't really think Palmer or Johnston are major losses (overrated?) but I suppose that depends on who Woodvale have in waiting (ie any new signings)

I'd say it'll be close between Bangor, Muckamore, Derriaghy and Woodvale, plus one from the pack will spring a few surprises. Relegation wise, hard to look past Armagh/Saintfield/Cliftonville
