Ireland faced the West Indies again in the third Colonial T20 Series to determine the winners after the 2nd match was a wash out last night. The game was marred with intermittent rain before the deluge ended with West Indies poised to win.
Kieron Pollard inserted Ireland and they struggled from the outset after openers Stirling and O’Brien were dismissed at 23-2. Balbirnie (36) batted well again, but the highlight was Delany (44) with some massive shots akin to Paul Stirling on Wednesday. In particular, he launched into leg spinner Hayden Walsh Jr. with four successive sixes, but fell to Pollard on the boundary. Some bizarre running added to Ireland’s demise as they scrambled to reach 147.
West Indies were set 152 (DL) in 19 overs and despite Simmons falling in the first over to Paul Stirling they were expected to win comfortably given their powerful batting line up. However, the rain proved the winner!
It seemed the crowd knew the weather prior to the game as the grandstands were devoid of spectators including the Irish Blarney Army entourage bound for home the following night.
IRELAND 147 (Delany 44/Balbirnie 36/Pollard 4-25)
WEST INDIES 16-1 (Stirling 1-11)
Match abandoned
