that rule is ridiculous!! the sub fielder did not even touch the ball once. if Downpatrick had been trying to improve their chances of winning or cheat in any way they would have picked one of the many first team players who were training that nite...not the wicketkeeper.
i feel sorry for anyone who goes home after a game to read their trusty NCU rule book and find a way to win a game. the sub fielder did nothing to change the outcome of the game as he did not touch the ball at any stage and the Downpatrick team chased down Cregagh's pathetic total in just over 8 overs.
cheers gareth yeah just checked the rules, I have to say that sour grapes comes to mind. Our seconds beat cregagh seconds on tuesday night easily only to lose the points as they had complained about a 1stXI player sub fielding because of an injury to our captain. They agreed at the time to the sub fielder and subsequently complained to the NCU. He fielded for aout 3 overs , not sure if he even touched the ball.
If this is how clubs want to go about winning games it says a lot about the club. Yes technically the rules were broken but what other club would have brought this to the NCU's attention? He hardly affected the result of the game in any way shape or form.
Sad very very sad way to win a game.
Re Taito,
My understanding is that you are correct, a player starred for the 1st XI for example cannot act as a substitute for the 2nd XI and so forth.
billy....
as i see where abouts your located do i detect sour grapes?? indeed....
Hi Tommy
I got the crystal so thanks for dropping it down. The pro has just arrived today so we dont know much yet.
Rodney......
Did u get that wee piece of crystal yet?? I gave it to McCavery a fortnight ago. Hows your new pro gettin on??
Could someone clarify the rule about sub fielders, i.e can a player who is starred for a higher team not sub field?
Agreed Mr Ed, of course any club would do the same.
Re Davey - it has rained everywhere and others have got the games played?
Yes Robin I agree. The weather should come in to it and if the ground is fit to host a 50 overs game then it should.
I think there are some rules that need common sense applied to them.
50 over matches can be reduced to 20 so why not the other way around...
the rain billy! not because of mccallan but if we had him week in week out we would have a much better team. he was the main reason we won on saturday. his influence on the team makes a big difference!
congrats to all those clubs who voted with instonians at the 2009 agm to make match 2 a 20 over thrash.
tomorrow at ballymena a 20 over league match will start at 2pm with temperatures in the mid 20s.
sort this mess out before club cricket dies
Any idea why everyone in the Premier League has played 5/6 games and Waringstown only 3?
Awaiting the availability of Mr McCallan maybe...
As you would yourself Billy!
Paul, I think we are in agreement that the modern era has no bearing on the old Ireland set-up which is why we shouldn't really question the current decision-makers as they are in a different league to their predecessors. So are the players for a variety of reasons as the Irish game has moved to a much higher level. As for the batting order in Twenty20 games, having attended the matches at the Oval and Lord's last week, I don't think it would have mattered if they had put the names in a hat and drawn them out! Entertaining yes, cricket no.
Well said Clarence regarding overseas players.
In fairness though it is not moronic to question Phil Simmons selection policy in the T20 no matter how uninformed the questioner may be. In fact it is a healthy thing that the armchair critic can vent their spleen. For far too long Ireland produced talented cricketers who were exempt from criticism and were only expected to produce face saving performances. Thus for many generations the efforts were woeful when the bar was set so low.
Mike Hendrick was the start of a more professional attitude and it has been built on from there. That the public should have been disappointed with the T20 performance against New Zealand shows us just how far we have come. It didn't escape my notice that Boyd Rankin was a lot more fired up when he came back into the team after being dropped or 'rested' if you prefer.
You are right about Trent Johnston showing more passion than many's an Irish captain born on these shores.
I agree with Wayne. The critics seem to come from a few people in the North West and Dublin but they don't appear to understand where Irish cricket is now or they seem to have a high opinion of their own views. Also agree with Richard Bullick that the Ireland team competing in the FP should not carry the official Ireland name but be called something else. Not sure how that effects Ireland caps or does it matter these days?
